Lyosha is a former Political Science Professor at Perm State University in Russia. In July 2014, after being persecuted and physically threatened by Security Services, and Neo-Nazi groups for being openly gay professor, and vocal advocate for LGBTIQ rights, he was forced to leave Russia. Lyosha’s sphere of academic expertise is gender and queer studies.
Lyosha founded the Brighton Beach Pride (the first-ever Russian-Speaking Pride) in 2017, which takes place in May. Brighton Pride is aimed at developing a dialogue with Russia-Speaking diaspora community leaders, who uphold the conservative views, including profoundly rooted homophobia.
As Care Manager at The Alliance for Positive Change, he worked with undeserved individuals with HIV, chronic conditions, mental and substance abuse issues. Lyosha believes that everyone is valuable and has a chance to pursuit his/her/their concept of happiness.
Lyosha was granted asylum in the U.S. in March 2017.
