In 2015, New York’s Tectonic Theater Project was working with Moscow New Drama Theatre to produce Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde in Moscow. Gross Indecency is Tectonic’s award-winning play about Oscar Wilde and the trials for his “crime” of homosexuality. In the middle of pre-production, though, the Kremlin blocked the Moscow revival. Outrage over this censorship grew in the U.S. as news outlets, including the New York Times, picked up the story.
In response, Tectonic partnered with the International Gay & Lesbian Human Rights Commission to produce a one-night only benefit reading of Gross Indecency in New York, to spotlight the continuing censorship and persecution of the LGBTQI community in Russia and to raise funds to help stop it. In addition, Tectonic commissioned a Russian translation of Gross Indecency by theater-artist/scholar, Ilya Khodosh, and is making the translation available in Russia for free download, here and here.[if the hyperlinks don’t work in your post, here are the actual links]
